Cygnus Instruments was born in the marine industry, working alongside ship surveyors and commercial divers to this day. Four decades on, this knowledge of the industry and its challenges is second to none. Cygnus is now the world-renowned maker of easy-to-use, highly accurate ultrasonic testing (UT) equipment for corrosion inspection, flooded member detection, and leak detection of marine structures and vessels of all sizes.
Corrosion is a critical threat to the structural integrity of ships and offshore structures. These structures are constantly exposed to moisture in the air and salt water, which are known to cause and accelerate corrosion. To mitigate this, marine vessels and structures are often coated with protective coatings. However, these protective coatings present obstacles to corrosion monitoring and inspection.
Cygnus 4+ – Ship Surveyors’ Go-To UTM Solution
The Cygnus 4+ multi-mode tester boasts reliable thickness measurement through thick coatings regardless of corrosion levels – thanks to the Multiple-Echo technique (as specified by Classification Societies) and the Deep Coat function. Both features help eliminate the need to remove protective coatings, saving inspection time and costs.
The 4+ has a large colour display, allowing users to see and record thickness readings and live A-scans —especially useful when verifying measurements further. Furthermore, Cygnus’ Multiple Echo Technique auto-verifies readings for ultimate accuracy, and the Measurement Stability Indicator (MSI) confirms stable, reliable measurements to give extra reassurance. It’s easy to see why the Cygnus 4+ is a great asset to marine inspectors and ship surveyors.
Cygnus DIVE – Chosen by Commercial Divers
The Cygnus DIVE is a robust, wrist-mountable UT tester designed to aid divers in harsh subsea situations by freeing up an invaluable hand to perform ultrasonic thickness measurements underwater.
Its large, bright screen with live A-scan display makes measurements easily viewable to the diver and camera crew, even in poor visibility. The tester can measure various surfaces and materials using Cygnus’ Multiple-Echo mode for accurate through-coat measurements and Single-Echo & Echo-Echo modes for extreme corrosion. Other options include data-logging with Auto-Log, a range of ultrasonic probes to suit different applications, topside repeater facilities, and the HelmetView® – a clever remote display that sits flush on the outside of the diver’s helmet.
Many commercial divers have chosen the Cygnus DIVE because of its proven effectiveness in inspecting underwater infrastructure such as piers and bridges and in ship’s In-Water Survey (IWS) or Underwater Water Survey in Lieu of Drydocking (UWILD).
