Cygnus DIVE Underwater Tester

Ultrasonic Thickness Tester

This wrist-mountable underwater UT tester is ideal for underwater inspection in-lieu of drydocking, providing divers with a crucial free-hand while performing in water survey / underwater Class inspections. The Cygnus DIVE underwater UT tester is easily viewable by diver and his camera, even when visibility is poor, thanks to its large, bright display. Another key feature is the A-scan display for assisting with measurement verification.

Key features of the Cygnus DIVE underwater ultrasonic thickness tester include:

  • Multiple-Echo for accurate through-coat measurements, as specified by Classification Societies
  • Echo-Echo and Single-Echo modes for heavily corroded metals with a thin or no coating
  • Deep-Coat function to ignore coatings up to 20 mm thick
  • A-scan display to assist with measurement verification
  • Optional Data Logging feature with AutoLog – storing up to 5,000 measurements including A-scan data without pressing any button
  • MSI™ to help verify stable and reliable readings
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery giving up to 10 hours continuous measurement
  • Optional CygLink software,  Topside Repeater and HelmetView™.

Three Versatile Measuring Modes

  • Multiple-Echo: Uses three error checked back wall echoes to provide the most reliable and accurate remaining thickness measurements, with no need to remove coatings (up to 20 mm thick).
  • Single-Echo: Ideal for measuring uncoated metals with heavy front and/or back-wall corrosion. Also effective on a range of cast metals, plastics and composites.
  • Echo-Echo: Works best for measuring heavily corroded metals through thin coatings of up to 1 mm thick, ideal for measuring painted metals with heavy back wall corrosion.

MSI™ (Measurement Stability Indicator)

Exclusive to Cygnus, MSI™ ensures stable and therefore reliable measurements are displayed in Echo‑Echo and Single-Echo modes.

CygLink Software

CygLink is a Windows® based application used to transfer and manage data logger records, A-scans, measurement comments and material velocity tables. The program can generate PDF reports and export to Excel. It also displays A‑scans, allowing for after-the-event analysis of logged measurements.

TSR (Topside Repeater) Remote Display Unit

TSR is a remote display unit that is connected to the Cygnus DIVE tester by an umbilical cable. It displays the ultrasonic thickness measurement at the surface in real-time during the in water survey.

TSR with Video Overlay

The TSR can also overlay the real-time thickness measurement on to a composite video signal, displaying it on the survey monitor screen. It will also then be recorded (if there is a video of the in water survey), showing exact locations and the thickness measurement for future reference.

HelmetView™ Display

This is a remote display with a fixing bracket for Kirby Morgan® Helmets that have an accessory mounting point. This is depth rated to 300 m and designed for use in situations with extremely poor visibility and ease of viewing by the diver.

We used the 5MHz dual crystal as it gave the best results on the pitted steel we found on the many corroded ships hulls where we tried the UT gauge. The DIVE was reliable, very easy to use, has simple menu system and displays. The logging function was essential as we only had 13 minutes on the wreck each day; I could make lots of measurements and figure out the answer back home in post processing, we also didn’t have to write anything down or think too much as thinking isn’t so easy in 40m water with the effects of narcosis!

We have used the equipment with very good results on a job so far.

Regarding the MK-2 this has been working very good and we did over 1.000 readings with the same battery on two different days; we are completing a serial of surveys on pontoon ferries with a total of 4,000 readings and so far we are very happy with the device performance.

The Cygnus DIVE was simple to use and, like all Cygnus kit, it was good and rugged.

The large display was excellent – and clearly visible even in darker water. Readings were easy to take and snapped up on the screen quickly -which makes our job as divers so much easier.

The twin crystal probes were particularly useful on areas of very heavy corrosion.
