Single Crystal Ultrasonic Probes

Using the Multiple-Echo measuring mode, single crystal probes can read through coatings up to 20 mm thick.

Used with Cygnus ultrasonic thickness testers in Multiple-Echo mode, these single crystal probes are ideal for reading through and ignore coatings up to 20 mm thick. These portable UT probes are constructed from stainless steel and have a soft face – with replaceable wear membrane. These membranes protects the probe face, ensuring years of reliable and accurate measurements.

Probe Membranes

Cygnus single crystal portable UT probes have a protective membrane fitted in front of the probe face to protect it from damage during use. This membrane also helps the probe face ‘mould’ to surfaces being measured.

The performance of the portable UT probe depends on the condition of the membrane and how well it has been fitted. We recommend that membranes are replaced frequently as a precaution or at the first sign of any scoring, tearing or damage.

Membranes are available in two materials:

  • Polyurethane membrane (supplied as standard): Suitable for surface temperatures up to 75°C.
  • Teflon membrane: Suitable for surface temperatures up to 150°C with a maximum contact time of 5 seconds.

Membrane Couplant

Membrane couplant needs to be applied between the membrane and the probe face, as this creates a thin layer of oil that will allow the ultrasound to pass through.

A 25 ml bottle of Membrane Couplant is supplied in each tester kit.

Knurled Rings and Membrane Locking Ring Keys

The membrane key is used to unscrew and screw in the locking ring, which the membrane is fitted into, and the knurled ring holds the membrane in place.

These items are supplied with every single crystal probe.
