Cygnus Instruments Ltd are based in Dorchester, Dorset and employ 20 local people. The company was founded in 1983 when it developed an Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge using a measuring technique called Multiple Echo to give accurate, error-checked readings of metal thickness through coatings. Previously instruments for taking thickness measurements had been heavy, bulky and not convenient for use in the field, for example in the ballast tanks of ships. Cygnus produce a range of thickness gauges all designed to be as easy to use as possible and which are used in almost every industrial situation. They can all read through up to 20mm of coating saving time and money removing and re-applying them.
Building on the qualities of the well-known and trusted “Cygnus UNDERWATER Gauge”, the “Cygnus DIVE” is wrist-mountable, giving an invaluable free hand whilst performing surveys, particularly useful when there are strong currents. It is IP68 depth rated to 300 meters and has a large bright color display to make it as easy as possible to view by the diver and his camera. It is easy to operate with two buttons for quick and easy menu navigation using one hand. The readings can be logged either by the diver or at the surface when the gauge is connected to a laptop. The thickness readings can also be overlaid onto the dive monitor at the surface and recorded with the dive survey providing a direct reference of where each reading was taken. The HelmetView option is a head-up display mounted to the divers helmet so the thickness readings can be read when there is very low visibility in the water, for example in a river with a high silt content.
