Quality Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement Probes

Here at Cygnus Instruments, we take pride in being the go-to company for ultrasonic thickness gauges. Naturally, if you’re purchasing such items, you’re going to be looking for an equally impressive range of UTM probes. Fortunately, our team more than delivers on this end. With so many options available, you’re sure to find the probe that you require to get the job done.

UTM Probes You Can Depend On

Not all probes are the same, as each probe is built to handle a different type of material. Choosing the right probe will determine the accuracy of the readings taken by your ultrasonic thickness gauge. Choose the wrong probe and the readings will be thrown off. At Cygnus Instruments, we stock different ultrasonic thickness probes for this very reason.

When choosing the right probe, you need to bear in mind the minimum thickness of the material to be measured. Please note that lower frequencies are far more effective at penetrating corrosion and coatings, so this must be taken into account. We stock two types of ultrasonic thickness measurement probes – single and twin crystal probes.

Single crystal probes work best with thickness gauges that utilise the Multiple-Echo technique. For gauges that employ the Single-Echo or Echo-Echo modes, we recommend using twin crystal UTM probes.

Single Crystal Probes

Designed for use with Multiple-Echo devices, ultrasonic single crystal probes are engineered to read through and ignore coatings. Each one is equipped with a specially designed piezo-ceramic crystal that is intended to transmit and receive ultrasonic energy. The 2.25MHz 13mm (0.51in) probe is the most commonly used variant and is ideal for various applications. It is able to punch through coatings up to 20mm thick while in Deep Coat mode.

Twin Crystal Ultrasonic Thickness Probes

Ultrasonic twin crystal probes are designed to work with Single-Echo and Echo-Echo devices. A semi-circle arrangement has one half of the probe face sending and the other half receiving ultrasound energy. As the probe is used, the face will wear down, and the probe will compensate for this by “Zeroing” the reading.

Echo-Echo mode allows for up to 1mm of coating to be ignored, whereas, Single-Echo mode only works when all coatings have been removed. Each of these twin 5MHz 8mm (0.315in) UTM probes are built for a majority of applications.

Why Choose Cygnus Instruments?

Cygnus Instruments was founded in 1983, and for the last 36 years, we’ve stretched the boundaries of research and development to create market-leading technologies. This is reflected in our world-class selection of UTM probes and thickness measurement gauges, the latter of which feature the Multiple-Echo technique – a technique that we pioneered.

With strong roots in the marine inspection services, we’re always looking for ways to innovate; to deliver products that surpass all expectations. As well as product development, we invest heavily in market research; listening carefully to our customers to help us further innovate our range of ultrasonic thickness measurement probes.

The result is products which you can rely on; products which can withstand even the harshest of environments. What else would you expect from an ISO-9001 certified company? A company that is regularly audited, and one that carries BASEEFA and CSA certifications. As the most trusted name in the industry, we’re the obvious choice for those in search of ultrasonic thickness probes.
