To celebrate our best-performing product, 3 years since launch, we’re offering a FREE Cygnus S2C-Ex Probe when you order a Cygnus 1 Ex PRO Anniversary kit (includes a Cygnus 1 Ex PRO Gauge and a Cygnus T5B-Ex Probe)! Limited-Time Offer: Ends 31 December 2025.
Cygnus 1 Ex PRO Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge (UTG) is designed for taking reliable ultrasonic thickness measurements (UTM) in all hazardous gas Zones (0, 1, 2), coal mines and combustible dust Zones (21, 22). Featuring 3 measuring modes, Live A-Scan & B-Scan, advanced data-logging and manual gain and gates, this intrinsically safe instrument requires NO plant shutdown, NO Hot Work Permits and NO need to remove coatings! It is certified safe for use in Zone 0 Explosive Atmospheres – ideal for corrosion monitoring in fuel depots, road and vessel tankers, mines, chemical plants, oil and gas, refineries, pipelines, hazardous storage tanks and other hazardous environments. It is also certified safe for use in combustible dust Zones (21, 22), such as flour mills, sugar plants, and wood manufacturing.
What is so unique about this gauge?
The Cygnus 1 EX is the only one of it’s kind in the world certified to ATEX, IECEx, UKEX for Zone 0 and NRTL for Class 1, Division 1 – an invaluable leap forward for safe structural inspection in hazardous areas.
Reviewed “versatile, multifunctional, robust and intuitive” by our customers, it provides 3 measuring modes and a selection of probes enabling measurement of a range of materials and metals with severe corrosion or protective coatings up to 20mm thick, saving considerable time and money removing coatings! Live A-Scan and B-scan allow precise measurement verification with on-screen visuals via the large outdoor-readable display, and comprehensive data-logging ensures seamless data analysis and reporting.
Designed for optimal user experience, control, and flexibility – unmatched within intrinsically safe UT measurement, inspection is quick and easy for all skill levels, despite the challenging environment.
A closer look at Cygnus 1 Ex’s advanced features
Advanced users can adjust gain and gates to suit their application, with Manual Measuring Mode. Like a flaw detector, two gates can be manually positioned on the A-scan, gate height, start-point and width altered, and option to measure from or between gates. If 2nd or 3rd echoes are weak, Time-Controlled Gain (TCG) enables gains to boost weaker echo(es). Such versatility makes measuring tricky areas easier and more accurate.
You have equal flexibility storing data. Comprehensive data-logging offers linear and 2-D grid formats, 16 grid patterns, comments facility and radial points to investigate an area of interest, attaching up to 12 additional measurements.
Additionally, measurement settings can be saved for next use, and a user access feature prevents access to protected features.
The CygLink software, easily connected to via Bluetooth or data port, manages data analysis and reporting; data logger records, A-scans, B-scans, templates, measurement comments and material velocity tables; and can generate PDF reports and export to Excel. It also displays A-scans and B-scans for post-event analysis of logged measurements.
To maximise ease and time efficiency whilst working in challenging environments, two rechargeable batteries provide 8 hours of uninterrupted, continuous measurement. Users can switch between light or dark screen backgrounds to adapt to indoor and outdoor lighting. The display also gives 4 measurement screens: Measurement, A-Scan, Data-logging, and B-Scan, which can be easily rotated, and 4 quick function keys for quick access to dynamic functionality.
Why is an Intrinsically Safe certification significant?
Ignition sources are introduced into hazardous environments for essential tasks like machinery maintenance. Ultrasonic testing equipment plays a key role but must itself be safe for use in hazardous environments.
The Cygnus 1 Ex is certified safe to use in locations where there is a risk of fire or explosion due to the presence of ignitable or flammable substances in the air at concentrations high enough to produce an ignitable mixture. This includes gases, vapours, and dust.
This is because Cygnus 1 Ex is Intrinsically Safe. For equipment like Cygnus 1 Ex that contains electronic components including batteries, intrinsic safety technology limits the energy present in a system, meaning no arc or spark can be generated, and no component can generate enough heat to ignite a hazardous atmosphere under any conditions. This applies under normal use, with applied fault conditions, at low power levels, and low stored energy.
Cygnus 1 Ex’s Intrinsically Safe Design features:
- Limited output energy preventing ignition of explosive atmospheres
- Anti-static enclosure preventing static electricity discharge
- Redundant safety components
- In the event of damage or fault, no high surface temperatures are generated that could ignite an explosive atmosphere.
In both IECEx, ATEX and North American systems, intrinsically safe equipment can be used in any Zone or Division with the correct equipment protection level.
